Getting started with the Studiekeuzedatabase

You can retrieve the data from the Studiekeuzedatabase in two ways:

  1. by downloading the entire database in CSV, XLSX or JSON
  2. via a REST API (in JSON format)


Choose to download if:

  • you want a snapshot of the data;
  • you want to explore the data yourself;
  • you don't need a technical integration.

Choose an API connection if:

  • you want to populate a tool, app or website with data;
  • you need a live connection;
  • you always want to display the most up-to-date data.

Download data

After logging into the portal, you can download the data as follows:

  1. Go to 'My account';
  2. On the left, click on 'Profile';
  3. Under the heading 'downloads' you will see the available download files of the entire database in CSV, XLSX or JSON.

Requesting data via the API

After logging into the portal, you can create an API key:

  1. Go to 'My account';
  2. On the left, click on 'API Keys';
  3. Create an API key and make sure you copy it. The key is only displayed when created and cannot be retrieved afterwards;
  4. On the left, click on 'Profile';
  5. Under 'Available API versions' you will find the available APIs and associated documentation.
